My poem Beautiful Mind was written as a tribute to the great John Nash. The mental illness that likely unlocked his intellect also betrayed his humanity. Schizophrenia was a cruel mistress. She gave him fortuitous entry in to a world that few ever tread. Yet, he was dispatched from the academic world because of the stigma associated with mental illness. She played the role of both muse and traitor. Imagine what contributions his rare mind could have made had she not hobbled him.
American mathematician John F. Nash, Jr. was awarded the 1994 Nobel Prize for Economics for his landmark work on the mathematics of game theory. His life inspired the Academy Award-winning biopic “A Beautiful Mind.”
